U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is stepping down

A senior defense official has confirmed that President Barack Obama has accepted Hagel's resignation.

His decision to leave was first reported by The New York Times, which says he is stepping down "under pressure".

The Times also cites differences in approach to the administration's strategy in dealing with Islamic State.

Hagel was the first enlisted combat veteran to lead the Defense Department.

He began his term in February 2013.

The official said Hagel will remain in the Pentagon's top post until a successor is named.
