In the film Witherspoon plays a young woman on a long and lonely journey along the Pacific Crest Trail, following her mother's death, a heroin addiction and a failed marriage.
The story is based on the best selling book of the same name.
After reading it, Witherspoon says she immediately optioned it and set out to produce it via her film company Pacific Standard.

"I just decided I was going to get busy reading books and trying to change the conversation, you know. And really bring some strong, dynamic women to the screen, female leads, not just a third or fourth lead. I want my daughter to have women to look up to in movies and whether you like these women or you don't like them, they're a part of a bigger conversation about what does it mean to be a woman in this world."
