Ebola-free Spanish nurse to be released from hospital

Spanish nurse Teresa Romero is set to be released from the Madrid hospital where she has been treated for Ebola.

Romero was the first person to catch the virus outside West Africa, and after two weeks of treatment she tested negative for the virus, but remained in recovery until Wednesday morning.

Medical staff at Carlos III hospital in Madrid held a press conference to announce her release saying: “We are confident that when the patient virus-free, they no longer pose a risk to anyone else.”

Romero’s case created controversy in Spain after it emerged she had complained of having a fever for more than a week before being tested for Ebola.

More than 80 people who had come in contact with her were tested and some quarantined in hospital.

Healthcare workers accused the government of being ill-prepared for an outbreak, while a member of the government claimed Romero had failed to follow proper protocols.
