Having grown up in New Jersey, I had no idea of its history and where it's name came from. I was fortunate to get a unique chance to find out, for my wife was the sculptor who made this statue and we were both invited to Jersey for the unveiling.
For the 350th anniversary of New Jersey in the United States, the Constable of Saint Peter on the island of Jersey commissioned the French sculptor Laury Dizengremel for a bronze statue of Sir George Carteret to stand in Saint Peter's Square. The unveiling occurred 10 months later on September 23, 2014, a bright sunny day with a couple hundred people in attendance including the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey General Sir John McColl KCB, CBE, DSO and the Bailiff, Sir Michael Cameron St John Birt, QC who gave a short history of the accomplishments of Sir George, a son of Jersey who rose to great heights during the reign of both King Charles I and his son, King Charles II.
