Heavy rains disrupt search for Sri Lanka landslide survivors

Hopes of finding survivors from a deadly landslide in Sri Lanka have been hit by heavy rainfall.

More than 100 people are believed to have been killed in the tea-plantation village of Haldummulla, some 200 kilometres from the capital, Colombo.

There is uncertainty over the number of victims as authorities say some population data was lost. Residents are now taking shelter in schools and temples as the search for survivors continues.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa visited the area on Thursday and ordered police to investigate if there had been any negligence by government officials in identifying the risks and informing local people before the disaster.
