ROUGH CUT, NO REPORTER NARRATION

South Africa's soccer captain Senzo Meyiwa was killed by intruders in a township near Johannesburg on Sunday (October 26), in what local media are reporting as a botched robbery.

Police say the Orlando Pirates goalkeeper was shot after two men entered a house where Meyiwa was visiting, at about 8 p.m. local time (1800 GMT).

The intruders fled, along with a third man who had been waiting outside. Other people in the house were unharmed.

More than 17,000 people were murdered in South Africa between April 2013 and March this year, an increase of about 800 over the previous year, police figures show.
