Godrick ‘Slim G’ Nichols, a man who was shot eight times by two intruders at his business place in 2004, is now a volunteer drumming tutor at Her Majesty’s Prisons (HMP).
Nichols’ close run in with death has given him a unique perspective on crime and rehabilitation, and he has partnered with the ‘Grow In Time’ rehabilitation initiative to teach drumming to men and women at the prisons. The six djembe drums used in the program were donated by Grow In Time, which is the marketing arm of the grass craft rehabilitation program at HMP, started by Vonnie Roudette.
SEARCHLIGHT caught up with Nichols during one of his sessions and took in a bit of the lesson.
