CALLS FOR MEXICAN PRESIDENT TO RESIGN GAIN TRACTION
Mexican web users have been posting under the #DemandoTuRenunciaEPN hashtag, meaning "I demand your resignation Enrique Pena Nieto" over the past few days, calling on the head of the state, who has ruled the country since 2012, to step down. The hashtag is now trending and the strong online mobilisation comes amid growing anger over the president`s apparent inability to deal with the rampant violence in Mexico.
Thousands have taken to Twitter slamming Enrique Pena Nieto`s time in office so far, describing it as disastrous. Social networkers are criticizing rising unemployment levels and voicing outrage over the general feeling of insecurity in Mexico. And the disappearance of 43 students in southern Mexico at the end of September has fuelled fears further. They were in all likelihood kidnapped by members of a drug cartel in collusion with local police.
And as these posters illustrate, some have even stronger words for the president; calling him a traitor, describing him as public enemy number one, saying the head of state has never really taken any proper steps to combat the ongoing violence in Mexico. Some web users have played around with the February 2014 front cover of Time magazine which depicted Pena Nieto as the country`s saviour, to show people what they really think of him.
