Have you ever wondered how a massive, 360-million dollar ship gets launched into the water?

Often times, it’s not the delicate operation one would imagine for such a pricey vessel.

Such was the case for the USS Detroit, a 35 hundred ton combat ship that was pretty much just pushed into a river sideways.

It wasn’t without ceremony, though, as hundreds gathered to watch the event.

The October 18th event was held at a Menominee River launch site located near the far northeastern Wisconsin city where the vessel was built.

Among those in attendance were high-ranking Naval officials and a senator.

After the ship was christened, the metal base holding the ship upright began to slide towards the water.

Within seconds the boat was headed side-down into the river.

It bobbed around a bit, steadied itself, and floated further from the launch site.

The crowd cheered while band music played in the background.

This is the fourth navy vessel to be launched in the Menominee in this manner, and it likely won’t be the last.

Area company Marinette Marine has 5 more under construction and plans to start work on an additional combat ship in the near future.
