An Indiana woman has been arrested and is now facing charges for theft and welfare fraud.

Ila Solomon is accused of living with her deceased husband’s body for nine months and collecting his retirement checks after he passed away.

According to law enforcement officials, Solomon was not truthful when describing the details surrounding her 88-year-old husband’s death.

An autopsy conducted on her spouse, Gerald Gavan indicates he died sometime during the summer of 2013. However, his death wasn’t discovered by authorities until May of this year.

When police first spoke to Solomon to inquire about Gavan’s wellbeing, she reportedly said he was traveling with her sister and claimed he had been staying in an assisted living facility.

Suspicions arose among officers so they went in the home and soon located his corpse on the living room floor. He was covered by a tarp, bed linens and a powdery substance, which is thought to be lime.

Solomon later told police he had passed away only days before the discovery, on April 28th. When speaking to reporters, she claimed she left the living room door open so Gavan could be eaten by birds, as that’s what she said he wanted.

Court paperwork alleges she collected money from the Pension Benefit Guaranty, Social Security Administration and Veteran’s Affairs compensation benefits after Gavan died even though she did not quality for any of it. The combined total amounts to more than $20,000.
