Japan's Mount Ontake Volcano erupted on Saturday leaving a number of hikers dead. One of the surviving hikers managed to capture close-up footage of Saturday’s terrifying ordeal.

Thick grey clouds can be seen billowing towards the clear, blue sky. Within moments, nearby areas were plagued with ash, making it nearly impossible to see.

The once-sunny and pristine surroundings turned into a dark grey hue. The hiker who was recording spoke about the danger of what was occurring. He moved downwards in an effort to get away from the ash.

The eruption occurred just before noon at the popular destination. Many of the hikers fled to a nearby cottage, but the air made it difficult to breathe. More than 24 hours after the eruption, hikers still remained missing.

Approximately 500 rescuers continue the search for victims.

This is the first time in 14 years that an eruption in Japan has been fatal.

Mount Ontake is said to be one of the highest active volcanoes in the country.
