An exhibit in Boston shows that swings aren’t only good for kids, as they can create a beautiful display and bring a community together.

Höweler + Yoon Architecture has created an installation called Swing Time at temporary park comprised of 20 LED illuminated, circular shaped swings.

Micro-controllers detect activity levels and an internal accelerometer measures the swings’ acceleration forces. When they are static, a soft whiteish light radiates from the swings.

When moving, the swings transform from a white to purple color. Either way, whether it be soft or vibrant hues, the display adds a touch of color and fun to the area.

The architectural firm notes “Swing Time's responsive play elements invite users to interact with the swings and with each other, activating the urban park and creating a community laboratory of the Innovation District and South Boston neighborhoods.”

The swings, which are comprised of welded polypropylene, come in three varying sizes. They can be used for some childlike fun, relaxing, deep thinking or even exercise.
