The same day that Apple announced their new line of iPhones, computer chip company Intel was unveiling their newly designed wheelchair proof of concept that has been officially endorsed by astrophysicist Doctor Stephen Hawking.

Based in Santa Clara, California, Intel’s Connected Wheelchair Project was developed by interns and employees from the internet of things group.

The device is able to keep tabs on the health of the user, including body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure with a touch screen display.

It also analyzes, and shows the mechanical status of the wheelchair.

Another feature is an app that keeps track of the accessibility of places where wheelchairs with the device have traveled before, using a map that makes it significantly easier for people confined to wheelchairs to get around.

Representatives from Intel are quoted as saying: “A team of Intel engineering interns designed a custom platform that can transform standard wheelchairs into data driven, connected machines.”

Doctor Stephen Hawking has reportedly been working with Intel for many years.

He is featured in a video that explains why the Connected Wheelchair Project is an important technological development that will help people with disabilities in their day to day lives.
