And to mark the centenary of Julio Cortazar’s birth, Argentina is hosting a series of exhibitions.
Seen as one of the Spanish-speaking world’s greatest writers, he was born to Argentine parents in Brussels on August 26, 1914, but spent over 30 years in France, obtaining French citizenship.
At the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, photographs and some of his personal belongings are among the items on show.
“It seemed to us a great idea to capture what he was like – a complex man – by showing his tastes, his preferences, not only in literature but also in music, in art, in photography, in cinema and put them all together, enabling us to get a better feeling for him as a human and as a writer,” said Museum Director Marcela Cardillo.
Surrealism marked the novels and short stories of Cortazar who left Argentina for France in 1951 in protest at the Peron regime. He died in Paris in 1984 at the age of 69.
