Tango Thursdays is here again! Already!
Ana Luciano Divis, known professionally only as TANIA was born in Toledo, Spain in 1893. She received the name Tania from colleagues while still a teen. She started performing professionally at 18 and still 18, married Mexican dancer Antonio Fernandez who was known professionally as the Mexican. They formed Tania Mexican Dancing Partners and she became known as Tania Mexican. That marriage did not last. The 1920s found her performing with a theater troupe in Buenos Aires, and it was there that she found her love of tango in 1927. Enrique Santos Discepolo saw one of her performances at the Follies Bergere Buenos Aires at which she sang "Esta Noche Me Emborracho", a song he had written. She was introduced to Discepolo but he was a shy man and did not ask her for a date for quite a while. When he did ask her to his apartment, she said she brought a small overnight bag and never left. Tania and Discepolo were married and remained happily so until he died at age 50. They performed together and their best work was La Violetera, posted on this channel.
Tania was an active entertainer from 1911 to 1988. She passed away in her beloved Buenos Aires at 106 ~ asked the secret to her health and longevity, she replied "I always have a whiskey at lunch".
Here she sings the tango Viejo Ciego released on Columbia Brazil 5331B. I cannot find the exact release date as there are no readily available discographies for the Brazilian operations of Columbia but the Industria Brazileria was used on the label only from 1927 to 1929. This disc is now in my personal collection, a gift from Mike W. who loaned me all of those wonderful discs from the Groos estate to transcribe and share.
