Annette Hanshaw & The Original Memphis 5~Nothin'~1927

Frank Signorelli founded The Original Memphis 5 with Phil Napolean in 1917 and made it into one of the most prolific recording bands of the 1920s. The "5" recorded hundreds of 78s under pseudonyms and even more under the Memphis 5 brand. In this record, the "5" are accompanying Annette Hanshaw in an April '27 session for Pathe Actuelle, soon to become a subsidiary of Columbia Records. Annette's future husband, Wally Rose, was a Pathe executive. Various musicians would drift in and out during the band's long tenure, but the musicians for this session were identified as Frank Signorelli p, Red Nichols tpt, George Bohn cl, Miff Mole tb, and Ray Baudec d.

Due to the popularity and easy going attitude of Annette, most Big bands recording for Pathe Actuelle/Columbia asked for Annette when a big band girl singer was needed. Annette became the de facto studio backup singer whenever a female vocalist was needed in the late 1920s. In addition to the "5", Annette recorded with Lou Gold's Orchestra, The 4 Instrumental Stars, Ben Selvin & His Orchestra, Willard Robison & HIs Deep River Orchestra, Sam Lanin's Famous Players and Jack Albin and His Hotel Pennsylvania Music to name but a few.
