CALLS FOR ISIS MEDIA BLACKOUT AFTER EXECUTION OF JAMES FOLEY
“This video is extremely disturbing” … “do not share it”… “don`t be part of ISIS propaganda." These are the kind of messages web users have been posting messages to Twitter after jihadists from the Islamic State, formerly known as ISIS, uploaded the gruesome video of the beheading of American journalist, James Foley. The clip was published on YouTube on Tuesday supposedly in retaliation for Washington launching a campaign of airstrikes against the radical group in northern Iraq, and it has been met with deep outrage and widespread shock online.
Many have taken to social networks to condemn what they describe as a barbaric and grotesque act. They are urging others not to watch or share the video and have started a Twitter campaign, #ISISMEDIABLACKOUT, in a bid to stop the spread of violent postings, propaganda and footage from the Islamic militants.
Other web users have been paying tribute to James Foley, sharing photos of him at work. They are honoring his contributions as a news professional, hailing his bravery and sense of duty.
Islamic State militants have been issuing threats on Twitter over the past month saying there will be further acts of vengeance if the US continues its airstrike campaign. But according to American newspaper The New York Daily News, Twitter is trying to silence this type of propaganda and has deleted ISIS linked accounts.
