Walter was born in Paris, France, to American parents of Scottish and Russian heritage. Walter’s great-grandfather, Edward Stotesbury, was JP Morgan’s partner, and financed Henry Flagler’s railroad into Florida, which brought Walter’s branch of the family there to live, at first just a winter residence, but a place where Walter’s parents made their permanent home. Walter’s mother’s family, Widrin (pronounced ‘Vidrin’), built the first railroad connecting St. Petersburg and Moscow, so, in a way, the marriage of Walter and Tanya brought together two railroad families…
Walter’s great-uncle, James Cromwell, served as US Ambassador to Canada during World War Two. James married several times, and his wives included Delphine Dodge, daughter of Horus Dodge, founder of Dodge cars, and Doris Duke, heir to the tobacco company fortune. Although he bore the name James Oliver Cromwell, James was actually related to the brother of Oliver Cromwell, who brought governing power to Britain’s parliament rather than to the monarchy, rather than to Oliver Cromwell, while Oliver’s brother remained loyal to the crown and helped to restore the monarchy.
