A Russian convoy heading to the besieged cities of eastern Ukraine is continuing to court controversy.
A senior official of the Red Cross has arrived to mediate after Kyiv warned that “any attempt to introduce any convoy without the permission of Ukraine would be considered an act of open aggression”.
The 270 Russian trucks halted their advance on the border, turning back to a military base on the outskirts Kamensk-Shakhtinsky earlier on Thursday.
Kyiv believes the convoy is a ploy to help the pro-Russian groups prolong the conflict in the east, though the Kremlin claims its purpose is purely humanitarian.
Stoking fears of Russian military operations, reporters from British newspapers the Guardian and The Telegraph claimed another convoy of military vehicles crossed the Ukrainian border near the Russian town of Donetsk on Thursday night.
