Tried some further experimentation to get better quality.
I recorded on only one track of the tape, which oddly improves the quality.
Also I got more definition by using the space for the hsync for video.
The syncs are generated by the method I use to record it to tape.
Also a test to see how regular video would look like on tape.
It seems I over-modulated the signal a bit for this video, which is why particularly bright spots appear as blobs here.
