Joe narrates a tale of modern zoo keeping. Borth Animalarium takes in many unwanted exotic animals that were purchased impulsively. From snakes that grew larger than expected, to Terrapins that outgrew their tanks, and even and Ocelot and Leopard that become to dangerous, Borth gives these ill considered pet purchases a new home. Many other animals have come from RSPCA intervention and closing pets shops.
Joe explains with passion how the zoo now also has a new programme of species protection.
" People often ask me why I chose this career. It's a very hard job, lots of wading around in pooh basically (laughter) but there are certain moments that make it all worth while and we had one of those a few days ago actually. I checked the Demoiselle Crane eggs and found they were both fertile and that's the first time we've successfully got fertile eggs from a pair of Demoiselle Cranes and it's brought us one step closer to breeding them. With any luck they should hatch out in a few days."
Visitors from our Cardigan Bay Holiday Cottages can visit the zoo and be a zookeeper for the day, meet the trained zookeepers at petting times, have a pony ride, feed the cats - there is a wide range of activities to meet and understand the animals.
