A funeral was held on Friday in Moscow for the Russian journalist and his sound engineer, who both died on Tuesday in eastern Ukraine while reporting for a Russian state-owned television news station.

Fellow colleagues, politicians and other people queued to pay their final respects to Igor Korneliuk and Anton Voloshin both killed while on assignment in Luhansk for Russia 24.

Director of Russia 24’s parent company, VGTRK, said: “You have to have a strength of mind, to have courage and to love the profession, to go to the place where it is terrifying, where people are being killed, to tell the truth.”

Cameraman Viktor Denisov is the only surviving member of their team – he filmed the incident as it unfolded.

Denisov later said it was a deliberate, targeted action from Ukranian national troops. Both men had television logos on them, he said.

Russia’s federal investigative agency has opened a criminal investigation into the incident.

Ukraine’s president reportedly expressed his condolences and promised a thorough inquiry.
