Castrol Honda World Superbike star Johnny Rea started his career riding motocross, rising through the ranks to become British champion. Initially, he resisted the switch to circuit racing, considering it "too boring". However, in 2005 Red Bull organised a ride on a factory Honda Fireblade and the Northern Irish rider hasn't looked back since.
In 2007, he finished as British Superbike runner-up before moving to the World Supersport series with Ten Kate Honda last season. He took his first victory at Brno and was in contention for the title right up until the final round, losing out to his team mate Andrew Pitt. He made the move up to Superbikes in 2009 and took his first WSBK win at Misano in June of that year.
2011 saw Rea take a high-speed tumble leaving him with a wrist injury that sidelined for three months, however, in his absence, the Ten Kate crew worked tirelessly with electronics partner Cosworth to develop a ride-by-wire throttle system that gave Rea a comeback win at Imola and pole positions in Magny-Cours and Portimao.
Rea has taken this development on to his new bike for 2012, the 20th anniversary model CBR1000RR Fireblade -- and, if he can stay fit, another good championship finish is on the cards.
