Ukraine's Poroshenko outlines peace plan at inauguration

Ukraine’s new president Petro Poroshenko has said Crimea was, is and always will be Ukrainian after taking an oath of office in Kyiv.

Addressing MPs inside the Ukrainian parliament in his inauguration speech Poroshenko called for separatists in the east of the country to lay down their arms and said he would guarantee a safe corridor for Russian fighters to go home.

Poroshenko also said he intended to sign very soon the economic part of an association deal with the EU, insisting he saw the agreement as a first step to full EU membership.

In addition to stronger ties with Europe, Poroshenko insisted no federalisation would be allowed and Ukraine would remain a unitary state.
