Bolton Wanderers striker Jack Sampson has joined Southend on a month's loan, shortly after signing a new 18-month deal at the Reebok Stadium.
The 18-year-old will be be available for the Shrimpers' trip to Northampton Town on Saturday.
"He's a big boy. Six foot two. Left footed with a strong build," Southend boss Paul Sturrock told BBC Essex.
"He's an exciting prospect. I need a bit of back-up height-wise up front and he fits that bill."
He added: "He's here for a month. If he excites us we'll extend the loan. It's of great benefit to him to be coming to the sharp end of a team."
The England Under-19 international is a regular in the Bolton reserve team and has committed to the club until the summer of 2013.
"It's a good opportunity for me," he told the Bolton website. "I'll be in a different environment and it's a chance for me to learn and progress.
"Hopefully I can get competitive minutes and continue developing."
Sturrock added he hopes to make one more signing before his side travel to Sixfields, which would take the tally of arrivals at Roots Hall this January to five.
