An enormous landslide occurred Sunday night in rural, western Colorado just a few dozen miles to the east of Grand Junction. The slopes near Collbran, a small town of around 700 people, collapsed at around 8:15 p.m. on Sunday as a result of heavy rain that saturated and destabilized the soil that formed the ridge.

The landslide, estimated to be around 4 miles long and 2 miles wide with a debris about 250 feet deep, is reportedly much larger than than the one that killed more than 43 people in Washington State in March earlier this year.

Three men who were surveying the area in a pickup and a 4-wheeler were buried in the slide and remain unaccounted for.

The affected area is remote, and no structures were reported damaged. But workers manually shut down three active natural gas wells as a precaution.
