News has emerged that the still-submerged South Korean ferry that entombed hundreds of high school students earlier this month was overloaded at the time of the disaster. It also underwent modifications two years ago, which crew believe made it unstable.
South Korea's shipping authority lists the Sewol's maximum recommended cargo capacity as 987 short tonnes. At the time of the accident it was carrying 3,608 short tonnes of cargo.
When it was bought in 2012, the company operating added another deck, increasing passenger capacity by more than 150 people.
Though the modifications met safety standards, former crew say the ship was difficult to handle and was prone to instability.
This may have contributed to the ship's capsizing. The official death toll now stands at 157. A further 145 are still unaccounted for.
