A body of a marine has been recovered, the U.S. military says, confirming reports that a soldier was killed May 19th after falling from an Osprey MV-22B aircraft.
The U.S. military has now confirmed the death of a U.S. marine, who was killed Monday night after falling out of an Osprey aircraft.
The Marines were carrying out a night training exercise during which the cargo bay door is left open.
But troops are supposed to be buckled in or tethered during flights.
For unknown reasons, however, Marine Steven Hancock from Coal City, Illinois fell out of the cargo door.
A search effort began on Tuesday morning but attempts to use the triangulate the soldier's location from his cell phone failed.
The marine's body was spotted from the air later in the day in a wooded area near a highway.
A spokesperson for the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing based at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina said an investigation into how the accident occurred was underway.
