At least four people were killed and 21 injured when a university student went on a stabbing spree in a subway train in Taipei on Monday.
Taiwanese media said the attack occurred at 4:26 p.m., when the suspect, identified as 21-year-old college sophomore Cheng Jie (鄭捷), began stabbing passengers at random inside a crowded train on the subway system's Banqiao Line (板南線).
Wielding a 30-centimeter fruit knife, Cheng worked his way up from the rear car of the moving train as it made its way from Longshan Temple Station (龍山寺站) in Taipei to Jiangzicui Station (江子翠站) in New Taipei City (新北市), a journey that takes about five minutes.
Police said the suspect may have deliberately picked this location for the attack because it's the longest single journey on Taipei's subway system.
After he was apprehended, police found a second, smaller knife on Cheng, in addition to the knife he used to kill people with.
Cheng reportedly told police he had wanted to kill people since primary school, adding that he had planned to "do something big" after his college graduation. But he decided to conduct the attack today because he had no classes.
Cheng reportedly said he knew he could face the death penalty but had no regrets.
New Taipei City Police Chief Chen Guo-en (鄭國恩) said Cheng deliberately aimed at his victims' abdomens and chests.
It was previously reported that the suspect was drunk and reeked of alcohol. Chen said the suspect's blood alcohol level was only 0.04.
