In April, two planes narrowly escaped colliding with one another on intersecting runways at Newark Liberty International Airport.

A report that was recently released by the National Transportation Safety Board shows that they got much closer to one another than previously believed.

The Boeing 737 operated by United Airlines, Inc. and the much smaller Embraer jet came within 200 lateral feet and 400 vertical feet of one another.

In aeronautical terms, that’s the equivalent of missing by a hair.

The minimum breadth between two aircrafts is set at 2 miles.

They were about 3 miles apart when the takeoff order was given to the pilot of the Embraer, an ExpressJet flight headed for Memphis.

The pilot however delayed departure and by the time it began takeoff it was only a mile away from United Airline’s incoming Boeing.

In total, there were over 200 people on the planes.

Upon realizing that the two crafts were in imminent danger, the United pilot was instructed to abort the plane’s descent.

The near collision happened where the primary north-south runways intersect with Runway 29, which is much shorter and traditionally used only when the longer ones are affected by weather or increased traffic.

Due to construction, 29 has as of late been put to use more frequently.
