Sam Darwish, CEO of IHS Towers, talks to Forbes Africa

Sam Darwish generated media attention in 2013, with a $1 billion investment into the expansion of his company, IHS Towers, with further plans for $850 million more in 2014.

Over the last 13 years since Sam Darwish co-founded IHS Towers, he has driven its exponential growth turning the business into the leading mobile network infrastructure provider acros sub-Saharan Africa.

IHS currently has more than 10,500 towers under management and works in partnership with the continent’s largest operators such as Artel, MTN, Orange, and Etisalat. Under Sam Darwish’s guidance, IHS provides jobs for over 1000 people, of which 80% are local engineers in the field.

Sam was raised in the Lebanese capital city of Beirut during the conflict of civil war. His family, having been financially secure, soon found themselves victims of the war and lost everything. Despite these difficulties, Sam was a model pupil and went on to graduate with a distinction from Lebanon’s premier university, the American University of Beirut, with a degree in computer and communications engineering.

Sam’s other business interests include companies in the US and Middle East including Vorex – a software provider for small enterprises across the US. Sam maintains his innovative and deal-focused approach, and is determined to continue IHS’ growth by building on connections with existing customers and developing new partnerships in order to accelerate its network roll out across Africa.
