At least 45 people have now been confirmed dead after a ferry sank on Thursday on the Meghna River near Bangladesh's capital of Dhaka following a storm.

The exact number of passengers was not immediately known as Bangladeshi ferries do not maintain passenger records, but according to officials quoted by AFP as many as 200 people may have been on the ferry when it sank.

On Saturday, for the third consecutive day, hundreds of relatives gathered by the side of the river as bodies were brought and laid out for identification, Channel News Asia reported. At least 45 bodies have now been recovered, while police estimate at least 100 others are missing.

Survivors to the incident have blamed the ferry captain who reportedly refused to stay closer to the shore as the storm started brewing.

According to Mohammad Ali, a director of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, the ferry was overcrowded and its lower deck was loaded with goods at the time of the accident.

Survivors said the ship was capsized by giant waves. As many as 25 passengers jumped overboard and swam to shore.

An investigation has now been launched to find out whether the ferry was carrying too many passengers or had design faults.

Ferry accidents due to overcrowding and defective ships are common in Bangladesh, AFP reported. In 2012, at least 150 people died when a ferry capsized near the site of this latest incident.
