Cheng Chui Ping, the mother of all Snakeheads, who became famous after being caught smuggling illegal immigrants into the United State from China, has died of cancer in prison in Texas at age of 65.
Cheng, originally from China's Fujian Province (福建省), was once an illegal immigrant herself. She allegedly organized a human trafficking gang and smuggling illegal immigrants into the United States from China as a 'Snakehead' - criminal slang for human smugglers translated directly from Chinese - in the 80's and the 90's.
In 1993, Cheng arranged for nearly 300 illegal immigrants from China to travel to the States on the freight ship 'Golden Venture'. However the ship ran aground off Rockaway Beach in Queens. Ten people drowned while trying to swim ashore.
Cheng was arrested in Hong Kong in 2000. She was sent back to the U.S. where she was sentenced to 35 years behind bars for bribery, hostage taking, illegal immigration, people smuggling, identity document forgery, and other criminal activities.
Cheng allowed her customers to pay part of the fees. After landing in the U.S., the immigrants were threatened with violence and kidnapped. Some of them were even raped.
US authorities accused Cheng of running the most extensive and lucrative smuggling ring. She reportedly had collected more than $40 million from immigrants by charging them as much as $35,000 per person to travel on her rickety boats.
However, the Chinese community in New York mourned her death. Many of those who came to the country with her help praised her as their savior and hero. They said she was a modern day Robin Hood who helped destitute and oppressed Chinese people realize their American dreams.
