A 14-year-old girl might be facing culpable homicide charges after she admitted killing her husband and three others with rat poison in the northern Nigerian state of Kano.
The child bride, Wasila Umaru was forcibly married to 35-year-old Umaru Sani last week. Sani reportedly invited a dozen friends to his house in the village of Ungwar Yansoro to celebrate the recent marriage when Wasila slipped some rat poison she bought from the village market into a rice dish.
The groom and a friend died on the night they consumed the poison. Two others died while being treated at the hospital while 10 others were treated and released.
According to Kano State Police, the teen has been cooperating and is likely to be charged with culpable homicide.
Child marriage is common in Nigeria especially in the north where the country is mainly Muslim and impoverished.
