A U.S. pilot filed a near-miss report, accusing a Royal Air Force jet of cutting too close to his plane while parachutists were jumping from it during a training session at RAF Sculthorpe last November.
In the incident last year, the U.S. Hercules MC-130 was training over RAF Sculthorpe as a pair of U.K. RAF Tornado GR4s flew in from a nearby area.
The Tornado was flying at 350 miles per hour, nearly twice the speed of the less-maneuverable MC-130. The two planes got to within 1.8 miles of each other and were 700 feet apart vertically at that point.
Concerned for the safety of his parachutists, the U.S. pilot radioed a warning to the British fighter who responded back that he 'had every right to be here'.
With radar data showing there was no risk of collision, the U.K. Airprox Board concluded that the dispute resulted from differing perception and recommended better coordination between both air forces.
