At least 36 people died and four were injured after a passenger bus crashed into a truck and caught fire on Sunday south of Veracruz, Mexico.
The passenger bus left Villahermosa in Tabasco state on Saturday and was en route to Mexico City, El Pais reported.
Shortly after midnight, a truck owned by the Proteína Láctea Prolac company that was traveling on the Tinaja-Cosoleacaque highway stopped in the road at the 134 km mark following a breakdown.

According to a Veracruz government statement citing federal police reports, the truck was "badly parked."

The driver of the bus reportedly lost control of the vehicle as he approached the truck and hit it, causing both vehicles to catch fire. The bus was completely consumed by the flames, resulting in the deaths of 36 people, Reuters reported.

According to El Pais, the injured are now in a hospital in Acayucan, where they are reportedly out of danger.

President of Mexico Enrique Peña Nieto sent his condolences to the relatives of the victims via Twitter, adding that the Federal Police is giving its support to national Civil Protection at the scene.

According to Reuters, serious road accidents and bus crashes are common in Mexico, with a heavy death toll each year.

"In 2012, at least 43 people died when a truck hit a bus in Veracruz, and just a couple of months later more than 30 others were killed in a separate accident in Guerrero state," the news agency reported.
