Four large marine cranes are currently deployed in an effort to raise the sunken South Korean ferry and bring it to shore.
Raising the sunken Sewol could take several months to complete. In 2010, it took one month to salvage the Cheonan warship, which was five times smaller than the ferry and broken in two.
Among the machinery deployed to raise the ferry is a Samsung Heavy Industries crane with a hoisting capacity of 8,000 tons. Experts have also proposed using a floating dock to help raise and move the hull.
The Sewol capsized on April 16 while en route to Jeju from Incheon in South Korea. The official statement was that the vessel was carrying 476 people at the time, but the actual number is unknown. Many of the passengers were secondary school students from Danwon High School.
