Sixteen people were killed in two separate car bombings in Iraq on Sunday (April 13). At least 20 others were also injured, according to a report by Al Jazeera.
A suicide car bomber drove his vehicle into a security checkpoint in the northern town of Dibis on Sunday, killing six people and wounding 15 others, according to Bestoon Rasheed, the police chief. Civilians were reportedly among those killed, but a clear breakdown of the victims of the blast was not immediately available. Dibis is located near the city of Kirkuk, roughly 290 kilometres from Baghdad.
Later the same day, an explosives-laden vehicle parked in a busy commercial street in Mosul was detonated as a joint Iraqi army and police patrol unit passed by. Five civilians and five security personnel were killed, according to a local police officer. The officer said at least 12 other people were wounded in the blast. Mosul is located roughly 360 km northwest of Baghdad.
No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks. However, according to Al Jazeera, suicide bombings and well-coordinated attacks are a hallmark of an al-Qaeda's breakaway branch that operates in Iraq, known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
