Galdino Mellado Cruz, one of the founders of the Zetas drug cartel, was killed on Friday in a clash with Mexican soldiers, marines and police in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas.

Mellado was the number two leader of the criminal group that operates near the U.S. border and is known for its extremely violent methods, which include routinely decapitating rivals and hanging their bodies from bridges.
On Friday morning, Mellado was hiding in a house in Reynosa after escaping from prison, where was being held on accusations of armed robbery, murder and rape.

According to a report in La Cronica, Mexican forces tracked him down and surrounded the house he was in. Grenades were lobbed from the house and shots fired at the troops, while several carloads of gunmen armed with rifles and grenades arrived at the scene, apparently in support of Mellado.

Following the firefight, Mellado's body was found in the house next to a submachine gun. Five gunmen and one soldier also died in the clash.

The Zetas, famous for their extremely violent methods, control more territory in Mexico than any other criminal gang.

AFP reports that the federal government is expected to announce a new security strategy for Tamaulipas on Tuesday.

Tamaupilas, one of Mexico's most dangerous states which is criss-crossed by drug-smuggling routes to the United States, has seen an increase in violence and murders in the recent weeks, with more than 80 people killed since April 5, 2014.
