Caught on Camera - Diver Assaulted Underwater

One place you would probably never expect to be assaulted by a fellow human is in the depths of the ocean. Nevertheless, that’s what happened to a woman named Rene Umberger and she certainly didn’t expect it.

53-year-old Umberger, who is an environmentalist, had been taking part in a dive to document the damage to coral reefs off the Kona coast in Hawaii.

She was about 50 feet under the water’s surface when a man who was not in her group approached her and ripped off her regulator, which facilitates air flow so divers can breathe underwater.

It appears the diver became angry when Umberger pointed her camera in his direction, as that’s when he swam towards her.

For an inexperienced diver, losing the breathing device can prove to be fatal. Fortunately, Umberger is a veteran scuba diver and was able to put her regulator back in.

The suspect swam away after pulling it off, but turned towards Umberger again and made what she says was a ‘threatening gesture’ with his arms. Umberger thinks she knows who the man is, although he wasn’t immediately caught after the assault.

She wants him arrested for attempted murder. The State Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement is now investigating the incident and will reportedly turn over the report to the County Prosecutors office.
