Chocolate and Red Wine Might Not Be So Healthy

Even though people might want to believe that drinking red wine and eating chocolate is good for them, the antioxidant called resveratrol, found in red wine and chocolate, might not have all the health benefits that some research has suggested.

Even though people might want to believe that drinking red wine and eating chocolate is good for them, the antioxidant called resveratrol, found in red wine and chocolate, might not have all the health benefits that some research has suggested.

"Researchers at Johns Hopkins University studied 800 Italians over 9 years to see if the chemical was actually linked to less cancer, better heart health and a longer life." [KTNV]

According to the study results, there is no connection between resveratrol and lower rates of inflammation, heart disease, or cancer.

Study author Richard D. Semba from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is quoted as saying: “The story of resveratrol turns out to be another case where you get a lot of hype about health benefits that doesn’t stand the test of time. The thinking was that certain foods are good for you because they contain resveratrol. We didn’t find that at all.”

Some experts are skeptical about the study results including Dr. Nagi Kumar from Moffit Cancer Center.

"Kumar has some problems with the study including the age of participants, all over 65, at an age she says where damage to your body may already be done." [WFTS]

Previous studies have found that resveratrol works as an anti-inflammatory and might help prevent cancer.
