"I found my mother's dead body under the mud," son of Afghan landslide victim

They have come to bury their dead in Afghanistan.

Landslides in the northeast of the country engulfed hundreds of homes. The death toll may never be known with estimates ranging from 500 up to 2,700.

The Afghan government called the landslide site a mass grave. But hundreds are still digging searching loved ones.

(SOUNDBITE) (Dari) SON OF WOMAN FOUND DEAD AFTER LANDSLIDE, SAIF UL RAHMAN, SAYING:

"I found my mother's dead body under the mud. My brothers are still here under the mud and I am trying to pull them out. I urge the government to bring us excavators in order to pull out the bodies. Otherwise, I will get some people to dig for my family's bodies."

Against this backdrop of grief and loss Presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah offers his support.
