British satellite telecommunications company Inmarsat reportedly helped find the now confirmed crashed Malaysian Airlines flight 370 through a never before used method.

Inmarsat was founded in 1979 to provide satellite phone connections for sea vessels and those in extremely remote locations.

The firm says it now has a fleet of 10 satellites that provide communications capabilities for companies, governments and aid groups worldwide.

After flight MH370 turned around and went off course, the plane sent out 'pings' for several hours. The data led Inmarsat researches to conclude the flight went along one of two paths, either northwest or southwest.

A single Inmarsat satellite picked up seven faint pings from the plane, but without the option of triangulation, the jet's location remained a mystery.

Inmarsat scientists hit on a solution by using the doppler effect, the scientific term for the phenomenon one experiences as sound changes as it travels.

By carefully calculating the sound waves from the pings and factoring in the doppler effect, Inmarsat was able to narrow the search area to a much smaller band of the Indian Ocean.

Inmarsat says airlines in North America use satellite systems to keep tabs on planes, but this is not the case worldwide.
