HIV-positive blood accidentally given to two people in Japan

Two people have been exposed to HIV after the Japanese Red Cross Society failed to detect a contaminated donation.

A man with HIV gave blood this month, shortly being diagnosed as a with the virus following a blood test.

After a person is infected with HIV it takes about eight weeks for the body to produce antibodies. An HIV test can only detect the infection once the antibodies have been produced.

The infected donor gave blood regularly giving the HIV-positive blood eight weeks to slip through the testing regime.

The Japanese Red Cross Society says two people were administered the HIV-infected blood.

According to Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, the blood's donor was concerned he may be HIV positive. He believed he would be informed if his blood test returned a positive result. The Ministry is looking into whether any more patients have been infected.
