Amazingly, the boy is completely uninjured despite being subjected to cold temperatures at over 35 thousand feet in the air and taking in no oxygen.
"This is a first in medical science and a first in physiology, somebody surviving at 35,000 feet or higher for 5 hours with no supplementary oxygen. I just don't believe it." [ABC News]
According to a FBI spokesman, the male doesn’t remember anything about the 5 and a half hour flight. The boy chose the Boeing 767’s landing-gear wheel well for his hiding spot.
Authorities learned his story after he was spotted on tarmac at the Maui airport. When questioned, the boy revealed he had no ID. The teen later admitted he had gotten into a fight with his family and ran away just prior to making the decision to stow away on the plane.
Investigators have reviewed surveillance footage that show him jumping over a fence at San Jose International Airport and walking towards the Hawaii bound plane.
Recordings from the Maui airport depict him creeping out of the left main gear portion of the aircraft after the landing, which means most of his story has been corroborated.
The teen is not being charged with any crime. He has been placed into the care of Child Protective Services.
