Chinese ship attempts to block Philippine vessel in disputed area

A Chinese ship attempts to block a Philippine civilian vessel in the South China Sea.

It was carrying supplies and troops to an outpost.

This is the second incident this month in the two countries' territorial dispute, that is in no way new.

Men aboard the Chinese ship had signaled for the civilian vessel to turn back. But it didn't.

This is the Sierra Madre ship they were trying to reach. A rusty, old, Philippine navy vessel that was acquired from the U.S.

It's been grounded, and serves as a symbol of the Philippine's presence in the disputed area.

"What we want to accomplish is to keep this area ours. This is something we have been protecting."

Every four months, its crew is rotated. On this visit, they receive fresh cooking oil, and a flag is raised.
