Poll predicts socialists will do best at forthcoming European elections

Europe’s socialists will come out on top at the European elections in just over three months, according to a new study.

A Pollwatch survey says they’ll beat the centre-right conservatives by 20 seats.

Its last such opinion poll five years ago had an accuracy rate of 90 percent.

One of the co-authors of the forecast told euronews which new trends will emerge.

Professor Simon Hix, London School of Economics, said: “What is happening on the right is that the mainstream centre-right parties are losing votes to the radical right. And you see that in a lot of countries across Europe, and that is explaining why the EPP are going to do badly in these upcoming elections.”

European Parliament officials are pulling out all the stops to get more people to vote. They reckon a new promo film will help.

But some say it will take more than a snappy video; turnout has dropped at every European election since 1979.
