High-speed rail to connect U.S. and Mexico by 2018

U.S. and Mexican officials met on Thursday (January 17) to discuss the construction of a high-speed rail that would connect the two countries by 2018.
The high-speed train would depart San Antonio, Texas, pass through the U.S. border city of Laredo and arrive in Monterrey, Mexico in less than two hours. The 300-mile trip typically takes five hours by car. Passengers would be able to go through pre-clearance and customs checks so the the train wouldn't need to stop at the border.
U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar and Texas Department of Transportation Commissioner Jeff Austin, as well as high-level officials from the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, presented the plan to U.S. Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx on Thursday in Washington.
"Secretary Foxx and his team are interested," Cuellar said in a Fox News Latino report. "A high-speed rail between San Antonio and Monterrey through Laredo would revolutionize trade and travel between the United States and Mexico."
In Mexico the project has been granted funding from the federal government and the state of Nuevo Leon. The U.S., however, is still in the study phase of the project.
"The study costs $5.6 million dollars, and an additional $400,000 would allow us to extend the study to Monterrey. Once we have route selection then we will begin talking to the private sector," Austin said in a Fox News Latino report. "We are hoping to get this started by 2015."
In 2012 Mexico was the second-largest goods export market to the U.S.
