African Americans have made contributions to this country ever since their arrival over 400 years ago. From art to science, and music and literature black men and women have helped this country become what it is today. Along the way there have been many in the African American community who have gained notoriety for their work. These famous black people have left an indelible stamp on America that will be forever intertwined with the whole of American History. This article talks about just a few of the many famous black people who changed America.

Although there are many famous black people to chronicle, one of the most famous, influential and inspirational people in American history is Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass was an orator, abolitionist and statesman, and is one of the most important figures in the 19th century. With the ear of President Abraham Lincoln as well as many of the influential politicians and statesmen of the day, Frederick Douglass reached millions with his legendary speeches as well as his writings in several newspapers of the day.

If Douglass was the man in the 19th century it is arguable that Martin Luther King Jr. was the most important African American of the 20th century. As a leader in the civil rights movement MArtin Luther King led the south out of their entrenched Jim Crow subjugation of clacks and into a new era of freedom.

Many give Martin Luther King Jr. single-handed credit for the success of the civil rights movement, but many believe that if there were no Malcolm X there would be no Martin Lither King. While MArtin Luther King Jr. preached non-violence, Malcolm X told his followers 'by any means necessary'. Although Malcolm X only condoned violence in self-defense he still put immense pressure on the 'establishment' to change their ways. to this day Malcolm X remains a hero to many as one of the most influential black leaders of all time.

There are so many famous and inspirational black people that we owe a debt of thanks to. These are but three of the most well known. There are countless other less famous black people that deserve just as much credit for their impact on the direction of America. We salute these inspirational people not for their fame, but for their impact on making the country and the world a better place.
