Security build-up is almost complete as Putin intends to make Sochi 'the safest Games'

There is only one day to go before the official opening of the Sochi Olympics where security is expected to be more obvious than at any previous winter or summer Games.

Around 40,000 police and armed forces will be involved in keeping competitors and spectators safe while at the same time trying not to affect the spirit.

President Vladimir Putin has already visited the athletes’ village.

He is staking his reputation on Sochi’s success while being all too aware that they are being staged only a few hundred kilometres from the most violent insurgency in Europe.

Militant Islamists in the Russian Caucasus republics have vowed to disrupt them.

However with the Olympic flame’s arrival in the Black Sea resort, the build-up on several levels is almost complete.

Having visited 135 cities since leaving Moscow the flame’s last journey will be into the Olympic stadium on Friday.
